Change can seem difficult. Change can seem scary. We look at the things we want to change and we see them as if through a pair of binoculars – up close, impossibly intimidating. It can seem a little safer, more comfortable, to stay as we are. But that can often feel horrible too.
So many people hate where they are and yet feel paralysed, unable and afraid to make changes happen. Does that feel familiar?It’s a particularly common state of affairs for people on the autistic spectrum. I work with such things every day in Reading, Oxford, Wallingford and Thame.
Does that sound familiar? Is remaining in the same place too horrible an idea whilst changing things seems too impossibly scary?
I’ve helped plenty of people with hypnotherapy in Reading, Oxford, London, Wallingford and Thame. They were people who had been paralysed between the dislike of where they were and the fear of making things happen.
Perhaps they were stuck in a bad relationship. It made them unhappy but they couldn’t see a way of being free.
Perhaps they were relying on alcohol in order to regulate their emotions. They knew that their habits were harmful but they didn’t know how to do anything different.
I see people who are stuck in the routines of OCD, health anxiety, addictive behaviours and suchlike. Changing their behaviours and habits once seemed impossible.
Change needn’t feel quite so intimidating as all that. Break it down into smaller chunks and it begins to feel OK.
They came to see that change was possible and that they could manage it with a calm, confident sense of control.

Nobody ever leapt to the top of a mountain with a single bound. The largest mountains are built of the tiniest molecules of matter. The small things really do matter and build up into something significant.
Change happens when we take the smallest step towards doing things differently. Once we begin to change it can take on its own momentum, gathering speed until the goal is achieved.
The hardest part is making a start
I remember watching Geoff Capes as a child. If you’re too young to remember then he was once Britain’s strongest man. He may have been the world’s strongest at one stage. I forget. Still, there was an event in which contestants pulled a truck for 100 metres.
He was a huge man and yet looked tiny compared to that truck.
The hardest part, as always, was getting the thing to move an inch. Once it was moving, once those tyres began to turn,however, the rest was increasingly easy.
The hardest part is simply making a start. I could be there for you, helping you to make that tiniest change which, in time, will acquire its own momentum.
