Hypochondria, to my mind, summons up images of Kenneth Connor in ‘Carry on Sergeant’ – a man who had absolutely nothing wrong with him but who forever plagued the doctor with entirely imaginary complaints. He received no sympathy in that film but was mocked, cajoled and treated as a coward.

I find that my clients with health anxiety are all too often treated with a similar lack of empathy. Too often their fears are treated as being silly and ridiculous. In this day and age, with Covid 19 running riot, it’s a pity that the condition isn’t better understood.

Perhaps the worst thing is that people suffering from health anxiety don’t often treat themselves any better either. They beat themselves up remorselessly for their fear and this only renders the problem worse. 

I believe that you’ve ridiculed and criticised yourself enough already. It hasn’t helped and has, in fact, made things worse. Health anxiety is a real anxiety!

Health anxiety is often mocked and dismissed. Sometimes doctors will lose patience with people who call too often, brimming with anxiety, and sometimes they will indulge them, sending them for pointless tests in order to put their minds at rest. The covid pandemic has made contacting doctors difficult, leaving sufferers in emotional agony. Neither approach works in any case. Reassurance from medical professionals never proves to be more than a temporary help. The doubt and the questions soon return. In fact, the temporary relief obtained through securing such reassurance becomes addictive and so increases the frequency with which medical reassurance is sought. The only way to defeat health anxiety is head on, step by step.

Whatever the cause, the anxiety is real enough

health anxietyFor some people anxiety is the coat and health is the hook. Sometimes an anxiety will just fix itself upon something, almost anything, which is why some people develop unusual phobias of ladybirds, buttons or clouds.

For others, however, they may have already been prone to anxiety and stress but something real will cause them to divert their attention and anxiety to health-related matters.

This might be a real health scare suffered whilst either a child or an adult. It’s amazing how a trauma of any kind can cause a person to be on high-alert for a repetition forever after. It’s not logical, perhaps, but it’s completely understandable. I’ve had clients who found it impossible to let go after an experience of cancer or a heart attack. I think most of us can find that easy enough to understand.

I have worked with clients who grew up with chronically unwell parents. That was enough to instill the fear of illness and disease. 

Others simply had parents who were overly-obsessed with health related issues such as cleaning, sell-by-dates or the like. Health anxiety shares a great deal with OCD and having parents with such a problem can easily transmit the fear down through the generations.

It must feel as if something in your mind is trying to tear your life to shreds. This is what can happen, after all, as your anxiety spreads and you retreat ever-further into the relative safety of your own home, trying to stay safe and well and clear of possible sources of illness.

If you give in to anxiety then it will never stop. It will follow you as far as home and inside. The only way to defeat anxiety is to face it down and confront it. I’ll help you to do so, one manageable step at a time.

There are so many other potential reasons to develop health anxiety…

hypnotherapy for problemsOne client of mine saw a parent die very horribly when she was five years of age. Is it any surprise that she went on to develop a very lively health anxiety?

Perhaps a mother saw her child fall dangerously ill. Perhaps the fear triggered health anxiety and she was ever-alert to the possibility of it happening again. Perhaps she was already pre-disposed to anxiety.

Perhaps the hospital made a terrible mess of providing care and the mother now feels unable to trust anybody medical ever again. ‘Perhaps they missed something! What if they’re wrong? They were last time!’

There are any number of ways in which a person might develop health anxiety. Whatever your story may be, your brain is now doing its best to keep you safe. Hypnotherapy could help you to calm that brain down, so that you can get back to living a full and fulfilling life.

After all, retreating from life isn’t proving to be much of a help, is it? Hiding away just makes you feel worse about life, about yourself, and the more you grow anxious about that, the more that anxiety feeds the health anxiety. The more you retreat, furthermore, the more time you have to focus inwards and so dwell upon health related matters. It soon becomes a terrible vicious circle.

Retreat is no longer a viable option. Hypnotherapy and psychotherapy, combined, could help you to fight back and to get your life in order, once and for all. As with anybody else, people with health anxiety actually do get ill sometimes. What fresh Hell that can be! The good news, however, is that it can often be the health anxiety itself which causes the body to be prone to minor illnesses.

You can learn to forget to be scared
