Health anxiety is sometimes used as a synonym for hypochondria. I’m not, however, sure that they’re exactly the same thing.
Hypochondria, to my mind, summons up images of Kenneth Connor in ‘Carry on Sergeant’ – a man who had absolutely nothing wrong with him but who forever plagued the doctor with entirely imaginary complaints. He could certainly have used a little hypnotherapy!

In my view health anxiety could also be where a very real but relatively minor complaint could be talked up into being something very serious indeed. A headache, for example, could cause a person with health anxiety to fret they have a brain tumour.
Hypochondriacs have been the butt of many jokes over the years and they don’t always receive a great deal of sympathy.
They’re seen as malingerers, as people who are trying to evade responsibility, to get out of something. Those with health anxiety have inherited their mantle and suffer the same disdain.
I remember watching Carry-On films featuring hyperchondriacs. They were figures of fun and mocked.
I believe that you’ve mocked, ridiculed and criticised yourself enough already. It hasn’t helped and has, in fact, made things worse. Health anxiety is a real anxiety!

Whatever the cause, the anxiety is real enough
For some people anxiety is the coat and health is the hook. Sometimes an anxiety will just fix itself upon something, almost anything, which is why some people develop unusual phobias of ladybirds, buttons or clouds.
For others, however, they may have already been prone to anxiety and stress but something real will cause them to divert their attention and anxiety to health-related matters.
This might be a real health scare suffered whilst a child. It’s amazing how a trauma of any kind can cause a person to be on high-alert for a repetition forever after. It’s not logical, perhaps, but it’s completely understandable.
It must feel as if something in your mind is trying to tear your life to shreds. This is what can happen, after all, as your anxiety spreads and you retreat ever-further into the relative safety of your own home.
If you give in to anxiety then it will never stop. It will follow you as far as home and inside. The only way to defeat anxiety is to face it down and confront it. I’ll help you to do so, one manageable step at a time.
Your brain is trying to help you. Hard to believe but true!
Perhaps a family member once fell dangerously ill. This may have happened when the person with health anxiety was very young. The brain seeks to avoid danger, to warn us of danger, and a young mind is very impressionable. One client of mine saw his parent die very horribly when he was five years of age. Is it any surprise that he went on to develop a very lively health anxiety?
Perhaps a mother saw her child fall dangerously ill. Perhaps the fear triggered health anxiety and she was ever-alert to the possibility of it happening again. Perhaps she was already pre-disposed to anxiety.
Perhaps the hospital made a terrible mess of providing care and the mother now feels unable to trust anybody medical ever again. ‘Perhaps they missed something! What if they’re wrong? They were last time!’
Lastly, perhaps the person with health anxiety was taught to be anxious by a parent with the same anxiety. Such things are completely transferable from generation to generation. If you’d like to avoid passing it on, give me a call and we can put an end to it.
